Boxing: Tragedy in boxing: Moises Fuentes, former world champion, died after a brutal knockout

This Thursday, Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the World Boxing Council (WBC), informed on his social networks of the death of the Mexican boxer, Moises Fuentes, at the age of 37. With a career in the lower divisions.

Fuentes was world champion in the minimum and light flyweight divisions, with a record of 33 fights, with 25 victories, 14 of them by knockout, with one draw and seven defeats, the last of which ended up costing him his life.

Why did Moises Fuentes die?

According to Sulaiman, 'Moi' Fuentes remained hospitalized for more than a year, due to the after-effects of his last fight, held in October 2021. After more than three years of inactivity, he challenged David 'General' Cuellar in the port of Cancun, Mexico and was knocked out in six episodes.

After the fight he had to be hospitalized on an emergency basis, due to a blood clot that formed in his brain and he had to undergo surgery to remove it. Although he managed to survive the surgery, the injury was too severe and he ended up on a ventilator.

"Thank God, Moises Fuentes is now resting in peace. A warrior who fought until his last breath. Our condolences to his family and friends and appreciation to his wife for her dedication and devotion with indescribable love during this difficult year of suffering. May he rest in peace," Sulaiman wrote.

A brilliant career in the lower divisions

In 2011, Moi captured the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Minimumweight title by defeating Raul Garcia. Among his defenses, he defeated Puerto Rican legend Ivan Calderon. In 2013 he won the interim WBO Minim flyweight championship. In total, he fought eight world championship fights. He also defeated other important fighters such as Francisco 'Chihuas' Rodriguez.

Fuentes had duels of great quality in his career. But in his decline, he met the likes of Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez, who knocked him out in five rounds, Daigo Higa had also knocked him out in the first round and Kosei Tanaka in five rounds. He had stepped away from the ring in 2018, but he tried again three years and one month later and the knockout he received was fatal for him.
